Earth Day, or as Connor Says 'Earth's Birthday'

So April 22nd is Earth day in case you were unaware...at Preschool Connor learnt about Earth Day but of course he has no real idea what it is all about so when we were discussing what he did at school he said 'it's Earth's Day' and when his dad asked what that meant he said 'you know like birthday'.  From the mouth of babes...

What does Earth Day mean to me?  Well it is about my children.  I live in a beautiful country full of lakes and mountains and all you have to do is look out any window (well maybe not in the cities) to see this beauty as it is everywhere and this is something I hope my children never take for granted.  We live in Northern Alberta in what is called the Lakeland area, there are lakes all over this area.  I will never get used to this beauty.

We have a summer campsite at one of these lakes and we take
the kids out to camp.  It is a beautiful lake but like most of them up here a little chilly for swimming most of the year :)  We hope that in showing them the beauty of nature that they will understand how important it is to keep it looking that way for their children.  The world is a crazy place now, perhaps it has always been this crazy we just know more about it now than we used to thanks to the speed of information and research but I want my children and their children to experience the quiet side of life.  Nature is something that has always brought me calm, I can sit at stare at the beauty that God has given us for hours and never allow another thought in my head and I hope that my children will be given that experience.  Some of my greatest memories are of places just like these and I hope that my children and their children will be able to say the same thing when they are my age.

Preserving the planet for the future generations is what Earth Day means to me.  I don't really celebrate Earth Day so much but I do my best every day to reduce, reuse, recycle so that there will be more for my children.  It saddens me every time I see some green space removed for expansion...our town just ripped out a whole section of trees for an expansion of the highway...I guess by law there is too much traffic and they have to widen the road...but to see those trees ripped out just hurts as once that green space is gone it is gone forever.  Knowing that when I was a child you could drive for hours between towns and cities that today if you take that drive you are going from one town to another without any green space is saddening...don't they realize what they are doing tearing down those trees :(  I hope that one day people will stop being so selfish and start thinking about what they are leaving behind for their children.

WOW! Where you live sounds like a really pretty and wonderful place to live...very different from my good, old urban jungle! I agree too that we should celebrate Earth Day everyday!

Wow! Those are beautiful pictures, I am just like you, I do everything I can to reduce my carbon footprint and help maintain some of the beauty of nature, before it's too late.
