So I did my first offical photo shoot this weekend. My step-niece, Jessica, graduated from high school and she asked me to come down and take pictures for her. This was the first time I had taken pictures that weren't just for me so I was probably more nervous than she was. Anyway the indoor photos were a bust...the lighting in the ceremony and cap n gown ceremony were so bad that I need to do a lot of work on the few photos I was able to get in there...but I got some nice outdoor shots. A week before I went to this graduation my regular lens broke on my camera and all of these pictures (besides the ones taken by my lovely assistant...my daughter Ariel) were taken with my EF 75-300mm zoom lens.
Here are a few of my favourite shots, some of them I have editted...please let me know what you think of them.
This is the cap and gown photo...
Jessica's sister Kimberly was dating a guy from Jessica's class...this is a shot of Kimberly and Kurtis...
When we were taking formal posed shots it was a very bright sunny day and it was hard to get shots that weren't washed out...I had to get my brother to hold up an umbrella to block the sun....I told him Mary Poppins called and wanted her umbrella back :) Thanks for the help.
My sister-in-law thinks that this is the way all parents should travel...

I love the look of this photo...the pride in the mother's eyes. I have tried a couple of different effects on this photo...the first one I just softened the edges...

This second I made sepia to bring everyone all to the same colouring...

This is my favourtie photo of her... (I still have to fix the bra straps)
This is a photo my assistant took (Ariel)...I cropped it down to cut out some of the extra people in it and turned it black and white...

I had a lot of issues with the group shots...since there are such diverse skin tones and wardrobe colours...plus the bright sun. I tried aging the picture and I think I like the effect it has and has made everyone about the same.

I tried something different with the group shot...but since I didn't have a wide angle lens it ended up looking like a same old, same old boring group shot...when I started every one was at an angle from the graduate and it made a cool triangle shape but when I told them to squeeze in a bit it lost the shape. Considering there are almost 25 people in this photo I think it turned out pretty well.

Gorgeous photos! You did great!
Wicked awesome pictures!
These photos rock! Great job for your first graduation shoot!
Oh I have so many questions! First I think the shots are great, especially considering how bright that sun was! Do planners not consider these kinds of things when planning graduations and weddings?
Okay, so you're shooting with a Canon (from your picture). I have a 18-55 mm lens right now, and I've been looking at the 75-300 mm lens. Should I get it? Is it worth it to get those far away shots? Which lens do you normally use? I also want a wider angle with a very, small f-stop (I think you will know what I'm talking about). I am a big fan of close ups, so I want something with like a f 1.8 capabilities. What are your favorite lenses? Do you buy the Canon brand? Sorry for bugging you, lol!
